Two local enterprises, i.e., the Local Bar (Brian McLean) and Ryan Safety Management (Stephen Ryan) were the joint sponsors of the Open 4Ball played over Friday and Saturday last and it was fantastic to see the first prize won by the Blanche brothers, Kevin and Tommy playing off of (14) and (17) respectively. Kevin and Tommy played very consistently with halves of 21 points their 21 on the back nine. In second place, with a score of 40 points, were John Shanahan and the talented young man Sean Hawkins who has already figured on the podium this year. In third place were Ben Hearne (13) and Conal Murphy (18) with 39pts on the back 9. Well done to all the competitors and a special word of thanks to the two very generous sponsors, the Local Bar and Ryan Safety Management.
Sunday Singles Sponsored by Supervalu
Shay Hughes (6), now playing most of his golf out of Cahir Park, has obviously not forgotten his local knowledge of Clonmel when he put together a fine score of 37 points to win the Supervalu sponsored singles competition. Playing good golf Shay was level par after six holes but faltered slightly incurring two bogeys in the final three holes for an outward nine of 19 points. He started the back nine with three successive pars but took a double bogey six on the index 1, the 13th and finished the final five holes on just one over for 18 points and a total of 37. Hot on Shay’s heels was Donal Binchy (10) who turned in just 17 points and had a great back nine of 19. Donal will surely rue his poor start when he did not score a point on his opening hole. In third place was Eamon Lonergan (9), also with 36 points but his back nine of eighteen was not strong enough to stop Donal’s second place.
The Club is grateful to Supervalu for the wonderful sponsorship.
Commencing on Monday 22nd and continuing for the week through to Sunday 28th is a novel idea from the Men’s Golf committee, i.e., an open competition for Pubs & Societies to entice players who are ordinarily not members of a golf club but who play golf with their societies and / or pubs to come and play in an Open 4-Person Champagne Scramble. This competition is open to gents, ladies and mixed teams and the only stipulation is that all entrants have a GUI Handicap.

Last Wednesday our competition followed the different format of a club fourball better ball. We had a very good entry and the competition was won by Helen Doyle and Margaret Renehan with a great score of 40 points. Second was Mary Smyth with 38 points c/b and third Liz Joy and Alison Sullivan also with 38 points. This week we have a stroke competition kindly sponsored by Elaine from Ryan Design in the narrow street.
Our new caterer Martin Kane is serving beautiful sandwiches and salads and we would ask everyone to support his new business. It was great to see Olive Wrixon back in the clubhouse, she has been missed and we all wish her well after her knee operation and hope she is back playing golf soon.
Our Senior cup team consisting of Roisin Quinlivan, Gemma Murphy, Anna Moloney, Helen O Donoghue and Bobbi Holohan were in action in Tipperary last Saturday. They had an early start and were up against a young Lahinch team who proved too strong on the day. Thanks to everyone that caddied and supported. Next Saturday our Revive Active team our playing Fota Ladies in Cobh. This is the second round of this exciting completion and Managers Norma Sullivan and Anne Fahey have high hopes for the team. Remember the club is hosting a fund raiser on the night of June 2nd at the greyhound track. If anyone would like to book a table for dinner please contact Liz Joy. We would ask all the ladies to support what will be a great night. The ladies also wish to congratulate Clonmel’s Jimmy Bruen team and wish then every success in this challenging competition.
