 CLONMEL GOLF CLUB

Men’s Section

Jimmy Bruen and Pierce Purcell Teams

We had hoped for a great week for the Club because our Jimmy Bruen Team was through to the East Munster Final to be played against West Waterford at Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club on Thursday last and our Pierce Purcell Team was in action in Cahir Park at the weekend. By all accounts a good turnout of supporters was expected at Carrick but they were gobsmacked to be informed - even before they travelled to Carrick - that our team had been disqualified because of an error in the handicap set up. There are specific rules regarding the handicap of each player and each pair and through a simple oversight the handicap total of one pair on the team was incorrect and in those circumstances the whole team was disqualified. It was a great pity because the opinion of all members of the Club was that we had a very strong team that might have gone ‘all the way’

On Saturday, our Pierce Purcell Team won their first match - after a long rain delay. Playing against near neighbours Slievenamon the result was a good victory for Clonmel against a strong Slievenamon team. On Sunday morning, the team was pitted against Templemore with the winners to play either Thurles or Ballykisteen in the afternoon. While they did not get off to a great start in the first match the backroom boys had done their homework well and the next three matches had enough firepower to bring the match to a victorious conclusion with only one match going as far as the 17th. Thurles had beaten Ballykisteen and were firm favourites to win in the afternoon. The game never reached the expected highlights and while one Clonmel pair enjoyed a very early finish the next best only got to the 16th with the other pairs beaten earlier.  All the players played their hearts out but unfortunately on this occasion the opposition were the stronger side and deserved their victory. We wish them every success in the East Munster Final.

Club Singles Played on Sunday

Due to the very inclement weather on Saturday morning the weekend schedule was postponed and an 18 hole Club Singles Stableford competition was played instead. The results of the Singles are as follows:

1st Billy Acheson  (13)   39pts L3

2nd Pat O’Dwyer  (11)    39 pts

3rd Alan Shiels  (20)       38 pts

Gross Tom Duggan (2)    32pts

Up Next

Following the very inclement weather on Saturday the 4-person Champagne Scramble for Pubs and Society teams was abandoned but is to be rescheduled. This competition is open to gents, ladies and mixed teams and the only stipulation is that all entrants have a GUI Handicap.

Tuesday               May 30th                                Open Singles 18 hole Stableford (weekly prize and qualifiers every Tuesday until the big Final in October)

Sat & Sun            June 3rd & 4th                     The Centenary Cup, kindly sponsored by two former Captains, Joe Flynn & Ollie Connellan.

Saturday 10th June.

The Vice Captains (Mr. Tony Horne) Prize. A note to advise that the Vice-Captain Tony’s prize is an open draw and the timesheet is on the Notice Board

Competition Printer

Members should be pleased with the introduction of a Label Printer which is attached to the competition in the ‘entry’ hallway. On entering your ID in the computer for the ‘competition of the day’ a label containing the players name, handicap, date and competition is automatically printed which is then attached to the scorecard (by the player) so there’s nothing left for the competitor to do except sign his name and get his card signed by his marker at the end of his game. This system will eradicate the difficulties that have arisen in the past where players have forgotten to put some of the competition details on his card.

Open 4-Person Champagne Scramble

Also, up and running since 8th May, and running through to September 27th is a 4-person champagne scramble, open to Gents, Ladies and Mixed Teams, with the best three cards winning an amazing golfing trip to Spain with flights, accommodation and golf included in the prize. The best seven cards each month will qualify for a Grand Final on September 27th and to ensure gender equality, there is a guaranteed prize for an all ladies Team.

Entry is €100 per team or €25 per person and any re-entry by any person is €20.

In general, there will be very few days when play will not be possible in this competition, e.g., major Ladies and / or Gents competitions (Captains/Presidents/Vice Captains) so you can book on line at www.clonmelgolfclub.com or phone the Club on 052.6124050.

All our ladies were also delighted to sample our new caterer Martin Kane’s new menu, delicious sandwiches, salads and paninis on offer. This week the club lotto is 16000 + so why not come up for lunch and enter the lotto. If you are not in you cannot win!

Also, last week saw the opening matches of the revive active competition. Three of our team played in Clonmel and two pairings went to Cobh. Clonmel played brilliant golf and won the match. Next round will be against either Waterford or Tramore.

This week our competition is kindly sponsored by Geraldine O’Gorman and is a POY competition, reminder that 3 18 hole competition cards are needed in order to be eligible for Lady Captain’s Prize on June 17th.

On Friday June 2nd, the club are holding a fund raiser in Clonmel greyhound track, we ask all ladies to support what will be a great night and good fun.
