CLONMEL GOLF CLUB
‘Young Captain’ Daniel Wins Vice Captain’s Prize
It augers well for the future of golf in Clonmel Golf Club when the Junior Captain, Daniel Foley, held his nerve against some very seasoned players to win the Vice Captain’s (Mr. Tony Horne) Prize with an excellent score of 99 nett, winning by just ½ a shot from the very experienced John Molloy. This first ‘major’ of the year nearly came a cropper thanks to very serious rain which fell from mid- afternoon on Friday until nearly 6 am, on Saturday, which kept the Vice- Captain in front of his computer all night long keeping an eye on the Radar on Met.ie, but his prayers were answered when the course was declared open for play and although there were some late withdrawals nearly 120 stalwarts took to the first tee to chase the wonderful first prize. While the rain did stay away the wind was blowing a gale and indeed blew away many a hopeful score throughout the day.
As is customary, the Vice- Captains competition is played over 27 holes of stroke play with the leading 15 players playing off over nine holes after the first eighteen. Leading after the eighteen was the eventual winner, young Daniel Foley who had a great 67 nett off of his 16 handicap. Hot on his heels were Thomas Blanche, 68, and Billy Bergin, 69, - former Irish international hockey player - with John Bourke, 70, and Denis Buckley, John Molloy, Tony Norris and Conal Murphy just another shot off the pace. The money would not have been on Daniel to hold his nerve playing in the final threeball but hold his nerve he did shooting a brilliant score of just 5 over par for the nine holes. The experienced John Molloy, who was playing in front of Daniel, had started very well shooting one under for the first six holes of the play-off but faltered slightly on the last three where he shot 2 over and his grand total of 99 ½ would just fall short of Daniels score by ½ shot. Gavin Smyth won the gross by shooting a brilliant level par 71 and Conal Murphy, David Power, Billy Bergin and Thomas Blanche took the remainder of the prizes.
There was a very sizable turnout for the presentation of a great array of prizes and young Daniel again showed he can handle the pressure when he gave a very praiseworthy acceptance speech. The presentation of prizes was followed with a very lively music session.

Last week saw an unwelcome return to wet and windy conditions. Well done to everyone that braved the elements but our competition unfortunately had to be reverted to a club competition Results are;

Gross Roisin Quinlivan (8) -7 gross.

There was however a huge boost to the ladies section this week with the victory of our Junior Cup team in Cobh. Anna Moloney, Katherine Morrissey, Bobbi Holohan, Deirdre Ronan and Helen O’Donoghue played magnificent match play golf to beat a strong Fota Island team. Next round will be against Tipperary on July 2nd but as Clonmel are hosting the quarter finals we must hope for a good home advantage.
This week’s competition is sponsored by Allen’s of O’Connell Street, Clonmel and in order to facilitate the hospice lunch in Minella on Wed, our Ladies’ day was changed to Monday. Ladies were also able to play on Sunday as last Saturday was our men's Vice-Captain’s Prize. There was a great atmosphere in the club that night with brilliant music, our new caterer was also providing lovely meals all day.
Next Saturday is our own major competition with our Lady Captain’s Prize (Mrs. Elizabeth Joy), the draw will take place on wed night and will be posted onto the BRS. Hopefully the weather will improve and whatever happens with regard to golf the ladies will have a great night in the club. Thanks to everyone for supporting.
