Paddy Murray Cup - 4Ball Matchplay Final

The long-awaited Paddy Murray 4Ball Matchplay Final was played on Wednesday last and was a complete sell out long before the two pairs took to the first tee, Lar Whelan and Ger Casey Vs Donncha Doyle and Conal Murphy. The betting in Paddy Power’s was even steven although it was considered that the long hitting Lar might have the advantage, especially with no run on the ball, and indeed it was Lar and Ger who took the lead early in the contest and were 2 up at the turn and remained so after the tenth. However, the 11th seems to have been the big turning point in the match when three putts gave some of the advantage back to the Doyle/Murphy combination and the match was soon level after a magnificent approach to the 12th by Doyle/Murphy. It was nip and tuck for the next couple of holes but Murphy had a fabulous - nearly miraculous - up and down for a great win on the 16th to put Doyle/Murphy ahead for the first time in the match. This pair didn’t hit the green on the short 17th but Lar did and when Doyle/Murphy managed a par and Lar’s putt for a winning birdie slipped by it left Doyle/Murphy one up going up the last where they held on for a par which was matched by Whelan / Casey but with no shot given or received on the final hole the match was over. For Donncha Doyle it was his second success in this annual event and perhaps having the experience of being in a previous final stood to him when the chips were down early in the match. But well done to all four players who gave the big crowd an enjoyable evening and apparently, they were very generous at the bar. Thanks, as usual Sullivan Hygiene the sponsorship of this great competition which is well appreciated by the Club.
