Choose Your Partner - Week

It was either the weather or the members enthusiasm for the Choose Your Partner competition (kindly sponsored by Martin Kane) but either way more than sixty pairs turned out to play in Round 5 which was a straight Scramble with just 1/12 of the combined handicaps as an allowance. It was suggested that a calculator be left at the Entry Book because of all these weird handicap allowances, 3/5 and 1/12 etc but regardless of the ‘difficulty’ in the calculation of the allowance it mattered not to Paul McGee (12) & Brendan McCarthy (13) who blistered the course with a magnificent score of 5 under par for the 12 holes, the highlight of which was an eagle three on the final hole and his winning score takes Paul into a huge lead on the individual scoring list. These two players have been playing very well together all year and surely must come under the watchful eye of the Team Manager and Selectors for the forthcoming AIG Cups & Shields. But the winning pair weren’t the only ones on the course with a 5 under total because keeping up last week’s good form were Billy Hewitt (4) and Garrett Condon (10) and the highlight of their round was an eagle 3 on the second which brought them to three under after two holes having birdied the first. But good as they were they only took second place on the last 6 because hot on their heels were Jack Alton (5) and James Geraghty (9) in third. Keith Norris (9) and Anthony Norris (13) were in fourth, while in fifth place was Larry Whelan (7) with Ger Casey (14) (and we think it was Larry who put the names on the scorecard). Bringing up the rear, also with a good score were James Geraghty (9) this time playing with Jonathon O’Mahony (18). With 10 of this week’s points winners getting onto the leaderboard for the first time the dynamic has changed dramatically whereas up to last week it was almost a certainty that anyone with a single point would qualify but after this week the qualifying mark is now a minimum of 2 points. But don’t despair, there are still two more competitions left, plenty of time to get to that qualifying mark.

Finally.... it doesn’t seem to matter how many times we remind players to make sure that they fill in the scorecard properly it still happened again this week with no competition name, no date and no handicaps on cards and indeed one card indicated that they had 31 on the 18th.
