Ticks

Raising awareness

There is the potential to be bitten by a tick while on a golf course as they are prevalent in grassy areas and dense woodlands. Deer can also be carriers. As members will be aware only a small number of ticks are infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Most tick bites are harmless. A tick bite can only cause Lyme disease in humans if the tick has bitten an infected animal.

There is excellent information available on the HSE website about removing ticks and diagnosing Lyme disease.

Sports Capital Grant

Grant Details

Clonmel Golf Club – grant details

As you are aware it was announced on 11th February last that the application submitted by Clonmel Golf Club for funding under the Sports Capital & Equipment Grants Scheme administered by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media was successful and that a grant of €149,176 has been awarded for the proposed project submitted.

The project for which this grant has been allocated is for essential course drainage works and facilities upgrade at the club. Drainage works will be carried out on a number of holes, both on fairways and rough, which are urgently required for the proper maintenance and improved playability of the golf course. These works will include the construction on the selected holes of lengths of new carrier drains with crosscutting slit drains connected into the existing course drainage system with associated sand topdressing. Selected areas on ten of the 18 holes have been identified for implementation of the necessary drainage improvements and a programme of works to include scheduling, timing etc. will be formulated shortly. The works will be commenced in the coming months and they will inevitably result in some temporary disruption to course playability, but every effort will be made to minimise this as the project progresses.

Other elements of the project for which funding has been secured include drainage improvement and the further enhancement of the Practice Academy in order to facilitate skills development, increase participation in golf and to attract new members particularly young boys and girls.

The grant allocated will also fund the purchase of course maintenance machinery and equipment to replace and add to the club’s existing ageing stock.

Regular updates will be provided to members as this project progress.

Shay Bannon
President

CLUB NOTES

Sports Capital Grants 2022: Great news for Clonmel Golf Club during the week with the announcement of the Sport Capital Grants scheme. It was announced that Clonmel Golf Club is to receive €149,176. This is fantastic news as it means that significant work can now be undertaken on course drainage and an upgrade of facilities to the benefit all members.

A very special word of thanks is due to these involved in preparing and submitting this successful application particularly Con Hogan, Tom Byrne, Áine Myles Keating, John Bolger, Patsy O’Keeffe, Michaël O’Neill and Sean Crosse.

Lotto: There was no jackpot winner this week with 7 tickets matching 3 numbers. The numbers drawn were 7,9,18,20. The lucky winners were Fred & Liz Binchy, Peter & Anne Morrissey, Frank & Sheila O’Keeffe, Nora & Jimmy Fitzgearld, Noreen O’Donoghue, John O’Brien and Declan Whyte. The next draw will take place on Saturday next 19th Feb with a jackpot of €6,200.

Sympathies: The club wishes to extend sympathies to Aine Myles Keating, Matt O’Donoghue and John Kidd all who suffered bereavements recently. We offer our sympathies to the extended Myle’s , O’Donoghue and Kidd families.

 Men's Notes:

Maher’s Londis CYP: The Aggregate fourball which was week 4 of the Maher’s Londis Choose Your Partner series produced an excellent contest once again with the result going to a back six countback. In the end the 52 points of Emmy Pyke and Keith Norris edged out The Ryan brothers Conor and Paul . At the halfway stage of qualification there is a real race on to get a top 40 spot. The final which is due to be played on the weekend of March 26th will be a 12 hole singles involving the top 40 and equals after the qualifying stages. Unfortunately weather beat us this weekend and delayed the start of week 5 which is a v par fourball. Because of the loss of the weekend this format will be extended and will now run until Friday Feb 25th. Almost 180 players have played in this series and with the qualifying mark at the moment at just 5 points there is still plenty of time to join this series and be on the 1st tee in the final.

Result of Wk 4 : Agg Fourball

Winners: Emmy Pyke & Keith Norris 52 pts (B6) 7pts

2nd Conor Ryan & Paul Ryan 52 pts 5pts

3rd Andrew Gartlan & Kevin Corry 51pts 4pts

CLONMEL GOLF CLUB
Men’s Notes
This Week's "Clonmel Oil Sponsored Open Four-Ball V-Par."
Donncha Doyle (12) & John Perry (17) with 8up. John was on the "frontline" again to come
to Donncha’ s assistance with an "Emergency" birdie on the 17th hole to put a sticky plaster
on what was just a routine procedural round!!. In second place were two visitors from
Castlecomer Golf Club were Jamian Butler (27) & Ethan Butler (25) also with 8up. Third
place went to Dan Morrissey (23) & Marc Ahearne (10) also with 8up....
The Donoghmore Cup came to a conclusion on Saturday last with Kevin Pyke beating Ned
Brophy in the final. A win on the 1st gave Kevin Pyke a lead that he would not relinquish.
In a bright start Kevin was 2 up through the 4th. A win at the 6th for Ned saw the gap
reduce but losses at 7 & 8 saw the gap open to 3 in favour of Kevin. This is where the final
could have gotten away and saw an early finish but Ned stuck to the task and had the gap
back to one on the 11th tee. A par at 11 was good enough for the win for Kevin. Once
again Ned was back to one down on the 14th tee but a short put on 15 for Ned stayed on the
lip and now there were two in it with 3 to play. Ned again narrowed the gap with a win on
16 but a par for Kevin on the par 3 17th was enough as Ned's 3-foot par putt stayed above
the ground as Kevin was the worthy winner of the club's matchplay competition. Congrats
to Kevin on a deserved win. Well done to both players on producing a final worthy of the
competition.
Updated results of the CV Financial Notice board in the hall.
Remember this is a 15 hole Non-Qualifying Competition ongoing with the final later on in
October.
Bulmers Open Summer Series Weekly Winner filed a card with a very tidy 39Pts Liam
Cooney (10). Persons on 38 Pts or better are looking good to make the finals on the week
ending the 8th & 9th of October.
Last date for qualifying for "The Bulmers Summer Series" is Tuesday next the 28th of
September. The reason being Men’s committee have decided unanimously to partake in
"The Play in Pink" for Breast Cancer Research ??. Sponsored by Sepam. We will mirror
the ladies 3 person Champagne Scramble for €10 for members and €15 for visitors on
Tuesday 5th & Wednesday 6th of October. It is a great way to get to don the pink suit or
possibly that pink cravat you kept hidden away for something now ??. (See terms)
Next weekend we have "The Scratch Cups" presented by the Magnier family (Senior cup),
The Wall family (Junior Cup), Patterson family (Intermediate Cup) and White family
(Minor Cup). As this is the first year of the scratch cups since the introduction of the WHS
the criteria for entry is based on your 'handicap index' i.e. for junior scratch cup entry is no
less than 5.4 handicap index on the day of competition and so on. (See terms).
Prize giving for scratch cups is at 8.30 on Saturday 2nd of October sharp.
NOTE: Some Course "Out of Bounds" Updates.
To the back of the 2nd green and at the back of the 18th green are now out of bounds areas.
Balls that come to rest on or over the boundary see rule 14.6
"If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief
by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball or another ball from where
the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6)."

 Men’s Results

The Ryan Motor Power Weekend
Saturday - 4Ball Betterball

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Ryan Motor Power there was a great weekend of golf with a 4Ball Betterball played on Saturday with a good turnout of players and while the early morning weather on Sunday may have caused a few to have a duvet day there was a good entry for the Ryan Motor Power singles also. The 4Ball Betterball was won by Billy Byrne (7) with Noel O’Brien (18) showing a solid return to golf. Their score after the first nine - 19 pts - didn’t have the appearance of a winning score with not a birdie in sight and a double bogey on the second but things certainly hotted up on the back nine for both players. Billy Byrne birdied the 12th - must have been the tip he got last week about his left elbow - and then Noel followed with a great birdie on the par three 14th. Billy struck again with another birdie on the 15th and they could afford the luxury of a bogey on the 18th to add a brilliant back nine of 26 points for a winning total of 45. Just a single point behind in second place was Jim Butler with Paddy Kenrick and a further point back in third was Paddy Ryan with Michael McArdle.
Sunday - 18 Hole Single Stableford.
The singles Stableford was won by Alan Barlow (18). Not a name that’s often seen in the winner’s enclosure but he corrected that situation on this occasion with a fabulous round of very steady golf and had two equal halves of 19 points for a winning total of 38. Alan would say that there was nothing spectacular about his golf and in fact had to wait until the 8th hole for his first par but consistency and scoring points is the name of the game in stableford and Alan had consistency in spades. A very similar scoring pattern on the back nine with good pars on 11, 14 and 16 to add precious points for his 38 total. Hot on Alan’s heels was the consistent Alex Casey who was just pipped by a shot and Alex certainly wasn’t happy about failing to score on the 18th when he saw the overall results.

Monday Evening Mixed

Please note that the Monday evening mixed continues on each Monday but the draw times are now, 4.45, 5.15 and 6.00.

Player of the Year - POY

The POY is progressing nicely and what was beginning to look like a runaway winner after the first two competitions has now become more of a marathon after three rounds. Paul McGee had a very early substantial lead but the more recent results have evened things up ‘a little bit’ with a number of players closing the gap on Paul.
Leaders after Three Competitions:
Paul McGee 46 points
Edgar Lonergan 36 points
Johnny Quinn 36 points
Lar Whelan 36 points
Simon Kane 33 points
Next round of the POY is the President’s (Mr. Michal Mullane) Prize on 7th July

Teams News

Although we had a very strong looking Mixed team on paper the chips did not fall the way one would wish when we went down by three matches to two against Templemore on Saturday last in Tipperary. Our Ladies and Gents put in a very strong challenge with some great individual performances but unfortunately Templemore had all the answers at the right moments.
Next Saturday and Sunday is the turn of the Seniors when the Senior Cup is being played at Faithlegg Golf Club…we wish our team the best of luck.
Up Next
Saturday 23rd June The Lady Captain’s (Ms Liz Binchy) Prize….and we take the opportunity to wish Liz all the very best for her big day. Gents please note that there are a limited number of slots available for men on the BRS for general play and we ask all men to respect the biggest day in
the Ladies Calendar

Munster Senior Cup at Clonmel GC - Report

Monday May 28, 2018

Glorious Weather for the 1st Day of the AIG Munster Ladies Senior Cup.

Taking on a strong Lahinch team,( who were victorious against Cork on Sunday morning,)
Killarney came out as winners of the Munster Senior Cup. There was a very high standard of golf
over the weekend. 11 team, caddies, supporters descended, on Clonmel Golf Club over the 2
days. Teams from Lahinch, Killarney, Cork, Douglas, Clonmel, East Cork, Muskerry, Mallow,
Ballybunion, Castletroy & Limerick Golf Club took part. Lady Captain Liz Binchy and her Senior
Cup Committee were on hand from 6am Saturday morning to Presentation of Prizes on Sunday
evening to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The weather was glorious on Saturday, with
Douglas, Lahinch, Killarney and Cork making it through to the Semi Final on Sunday.
Winter condition prevailed on Sunday, but that didn’t upset the top Munster teams. Killarney’s
Mairead Martin (+2) was taking on Lahinch’s Sinead Sexton also +2. Mairead won on the 18th.
Mairead is a 19yr who is doing her Leaving Cert in June. She is off to Kentucky University (USA)
in September on a Scholarship. A future Michele Wee!! Valerie Clancy, (Scr) Killarney took Aine
Donegan (1) Lahinch down the 19th. Valerie won. Valerie is 17 and is heading to Indiana University
(USA ) in Sept 2019 on a Scolarship. Next down the 19th was Kelly Brotherton (Scr) Killarney and
Sara Cunningham (1) Lahinch. They halved. On the 18th at the same time was Tracy Keating (2)
Killarney and Niamh O’Dwyer (3) Lahinch. Tracy was 1 up coming up the 18th. She putted for a
win, crowing Killarney Golf Club, Senior Cup Champions. It was an experience to watch high
quality golf over the weekend.

There was a great atmosphere in Clonmel Golf Club throughout the weekend. Lady Captain Liz
Binchy and her Senior Cup Committee put in a huge amount of work to ensure everything went off
smoothly over the weekend. Preparation for this event started when the club were informed they
were hosting the event last year. The Club House was looking great, thanks to Mary Smyth for
her arrangement of flowers on the balcony and outside the Club house. Maura Morrison for
beautiful arrangement in the Club House. Ned Lonergan & Frank had the course in excellent
condition and this was commented on by the visiting team over the weekend. Mens Captain Tony
Horne was spotted raking Bunkers at 6am on Saturday morning, 34 bunkers in total. Betty and her
team were on duty early on Saturday and Sunday morning in the Car Park to ensure that the traffic
ran smoothly.

Lady Captain, Liz Binchy, thanked her Senior Cup Committee, Mens Captain Tony Horne, Ladies
& Gent Members for all their help over the weekend, Martin, Michael & Staff in Catering for the
fabulous array of food. She thanked the ILGU officials, who were on hand over the weekend. And
last but not least she thanked the Clonmel Senior Team, Roisin Quinlivan, Katherine Morrissey,
Gemma Murphy, Deirdre Ronan, Anna Moloney & Bobbi Holohan, their Manager Maura Cooney,
caddies & supporters. The team put up a great fight against East Cork, with Katherine & Roisin
going all the way to the 18th. A great weekend was had by all.

The 2019 Senior Cup will be held in Thurles.
